Let me introduce myself, I am Allan Rooms, the new Data Centre Manager for the Edinburgh Data Centre. I have responsibility for the commercial, operational and technical running of Onyx Group's latest state-of-the-art Data Centre. I have over 20 years commercial and technical experience. I have worked in the IT/ISP industry for the past 9 years initially based in Sheffield and now re-located with Onyx to Edinburgh. My home is in Hull where my wife and 4 young children are, and all being well they will be moving to Scotland with me early 2010. I have worked all over the country and have come back to Scotland for the third time now. I have been based in Edinburgh since June 2009 and we got the keys to the Edinburgh Data Centre in early July 2009. The first task was to make the building a data centre in 8 weeks, and with the help of some great contractors we achieved this. What we have in Edinburgh is a fully resilient, Tier 3 Hosting centre that can offer a 'total data hosting' solution for your business. The building has 6 data halls and we have 2 already occupied and have just released the next two for use. We have ample power and there is more available if we need it and we will be controlling all aspects of the data centre using the latest software and facilities. My aim is to make the Data Centre, Accessible, Flexible, and Secure but also to make it GREEN. This is a big thing in the IT industry at the moment and even with low powered servers and the latest cooling technology, Data Centres will always produce a lot of CO2 emissions. It is estimated that a 3KW (about 12 amps) rack with the same amount of cooling will produce 27 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. We have over 700 racks potential capacity in the facility and that's a lot of emissions. We will be monitoring by rack the CO2 emissions, making the cooling more efficient by the use of blanking plates, making sure that we use brushes under racks where the power feeds come in etc. We go further, we have just signed a power contract guaranteeing us 100% green energy into the building, and we are looking at operating across the whole facility a Carbon Offsetting Scheme to make the Data Centre 100% Carbon Neutral.
